In 1978 the Khmer Rouge of Cambodia wanted to lay claim to much of what is now the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. They arrived in Bai Chuc and proceeded to massacure the entire village of 3500. There were only 2 survivors. After sacking Bai Chuc the Khmer Rouge killed another 1500 Vietnamese, wounded over 5000, and captured 20,000 sending them to labor camps. These incidents were key drivers of Vietnam entering Cambodia and defeating the Khmer Rouge. Vietnam went on to occupy Cambodia for almost 11 years drawing criticism from some of being more occupiers than liberators.
The Bai Chuc Memeorial pays tribute to the lives lost in the massacure. It feels like a small version of the Choeung Ek Killing Fields Memorial in Cambodia. It is not too far from Chau Doc and a good stop if going to or from Tra Su Cajuput Forest.
