The imperial city of Hue is a Unexco world heritage site. It was the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945 under the Nguyen Dynasty. It is around 1-2 hours north of Da Nang. A very underrated destination in Vietnam, it is rich in history. Not really a day trip from Da Nang, plan on a couple of nights to see the highlights.
The Citadel (Imperial Palace) is not to be missed and it is best to stay on teh perfume river which is close by an the main tourist area. In addition to the Citadel there are a number of opulent royal tombs including:
- Khai Dinh
- Minh Mang
- Tu Duc
A fun photographic location is the Hồ Thủy Tiên abandoned water park with a central dragon figure located in the lake. Don’t be put off by the guards, they are likely just opportunistic locals asking fo 50K vnd or so for entrance.
